Desire Production II
Desire Production is a sculptural installation that examines what desire produces by counterbalancing artificial sweetener with a luminous crimson candy. The two are held in a temporal tension with each other through a length of timber bent over a speaker. Both materials are transforming. A mechanical sieve produces sweetener to a high-pitched sound, while the candy threatens to liquefy at a change in room temperature. The question is, will the sweetener outweigh the candy ?
The artificial sweetener appears as sugar but does not contain any calories. When artificial sweetener is consumed, the sweet taste signals to the body to expect an energy load equivalent to sugar, however when the energy is not received we become hungry. Instead of satisfying, the chemical substance leaves the receiver unfulfilled. In Desire Production, the sieve only releases sweetener to ear-splitting sounds. The interaction between alarming sound and artificial sweetener is comparable to avoiding conflict or harm by people pleasing – creating artificial pleasantness from fear.
